When Is a Root Canal Necessary?
When a tooth is severely damaged or infected, a root canal treatment can alleviate the pain by removing the pulp inside the tooth. Common signs that indicate a possible need for a root canal are:
- Appearance of an abscess on gums
- Sharp tooth pain when chewing or biting down
- Swollen, tender gums
- Throbbing, persistent tooth pain
- Tooth discoloration
After cleaning and numbing your mouth, we drill a small hole in your tooth to access the damaged pulp. We’ll gently remove the pulp through the hole and thoroughly clean the inside of your tooth. Once clean, we seal the tooth to protect it from bacteria. When your procedure is complete, we may place a dental crown over your tooth for additional protection. The procedure can last anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour. When we’re done, you can enjoy near-instant relief.
Once the procedure is through, your tooth may be sensitive for a few days. Over-the-counter pain medications can easily help relieve that sensitivity. After your treatment, you can continue your oral health routine as usual including brushing and flossing your teeth as recommended. Just be sure to take extra care around the area for the first week.
